Research Summary
Our group conducts laboratory and field-based studies in vaccines and vaccine preventable infections. We study human innate and adaptive immune response to different vaccines in healthy and immunocompromised children, adults, and pregnant individuals. We are particularly interested in understanding the immunologic, gene expression and metabolic signatures of pneumococcal and influenza vaccine responses in immunocompromised children such as those with sickle cell disease using different tools including multicolor flow cytometry, CyTOF, single cell mRNA transcriptomics, CITE-seq (cell hashing) and quantitative/functional antibody assays. Additional projects include phase 1 to phase 3 clinical trials and phase 4 studies for vaccines against different pathogens such as pneumococci, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, SARS-CoV2, MPox/Poxvirus, and Epstein-Barr virus. With our international collaborations, we also utilize different study designs and epidemiologic approaches to identify disease burden, host clinical and immune profiles and pathogen virulence factors to guide development of novel vaccines for infectious diseases, with a goal of implementing new technologies for disease control in high income and resource limited settings.
