Three Western Connecticut State University seniors who have just completed their studies toward a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, Community Health spent the fall semester participating in the Connecticut Public Health Fellowship Program (CT PHFP), a collaboration between local health agencies, universities and the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

With a semester-long internship under their belts, public health majors have a greater chance to secure a full-time job right after graduation, thanks in part to a new partnership between Yale and Southern.

Sophie Edelstein, MPH ’24 (Social and Behavioral Sciences), a lifelong New Haven resident, was one of 12 YSPH Health Equity fellows this past summer. She chose to work with the City of New Haven’s Office of Community Mental Health Initiatives, and helped create the city's new suicide prevention guide.

The Office of Public Health Practice recently held its inaugural New Student Orientation Session, a schoolwide event intended to introduce students to some of the focus areas of the public health sector and provide them with important insights on working with community partners.

Seven UConn Public Health Students are gaining hands-on experience and insightful opportunities as part of their fellowship with the Connecticut Public Health Fellowship Program (CT PHFP) workforce development program managed by the Yale School of Public Health created in response to the slowly shrinking public health workforce over the last two decades in the U.S.

A new workforce development program is managed by the Yale School of Public Health’s Office of Public Health Practice in collaboration with the state Department of Public Health.

The Public Health Training Academy is envisioned as a comprehensive and convenient one-stop resource for public health training for new and existing members of Connecticut’s public health workforce.
