Research Summary

I am an Associate Professor (Internal Medicine) and Director of Harm Reduction Research with the Program in Addiction Medicine. I have secondary appointments in Public Health and Anthropology. My research program examines individual and extra-individual influences on risk, harm, and health care access among people who use drugs (PWUD), and the ‘real world’ implementation of substance use interventions. I have published 118 articles (>75 as first or senior author) in leading social science, public health, and substance use journals and secured more than $10 million (direct costs) in funding as Principal Investigator, including National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants (R01DA044181, R01DA043408, R01DA057672). I am nationally and internationally recognized as a leading expert in qualitative and community-based research, and in areas spanning harm reduction and low-threshold addiction treatment. I regularly deliver invited and peer-reviewed presentations to academic and non-academic audiences nationally and internationally, including for NIH’s summit on social sciences and the opioid crisis and the United Nations technical consultation on drug-related stigma. My research has informed the overdose response strategies and government decision-making, including Health Canada’s emergency approvals for low-threshold supervised consumption sites. My work has generated significant media coverage and I am co-creator and producer of Crackdown, an award-winning podcast on the overdose crisis.
