Abstract:

Commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) of young males has been underrecognized and underreported. The existing literature has cast males as willing participants, sex buyers, or exploiters, rather than victims. However, there is growing recognition that boys and young men also experience CSE and there is a need for improved identification, support and services to help them heal. This scoping review seeks to address this form of exploitation in males. Attention will be paid to men having sex with men (MSM) and sexual minority males who are disproportionately impacted. The authors will examine the risk factors for exploitation, the trajectory for male victims as well as proposed comprehensive treatment modalities. Primary risk factors for male youth experiencing CSE include histories of previous abuse, exposure to childhood adversity and trauma without adequate support, poverty, including housing instability, food insecurity, and/or lack of basic supports including transportation. Substance misuse and dependency experienced by male youth and/or caregivers and involvement with child welfare and/or juvenile justice systems are also risk factors. Additionally, there are unique risk factors related to males who identify as boys and young men of color (BYMOC) as well as LGBTQ+ youth. This review will also include the common sequalae experienced by these youth including the various social, emotional, and behavioral consequences of this form of sexual trauma. Barriers to identifying these youth will be explored including lack of disclosure and gender stereotypes and biases. Finally, the paper will explore potential paths to recovery and guidance for service providers. Information on providing trauma informed care to victims will be emphasized as well as the range of services they may require for reintegration. Syndemic-based interventions to treat substance abuse, sexual violence and HIV/AIDS-- common co-morbidities among MSM impacted by commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking—will also be examined.
