YSPH-SBS 525 Seminar, co-sponsored by the Department of Psychology: Dr. Ashwini Ashokkumar, NYU

“The psychological trajectory of large-scale upheavals: Insights from natural language”

Ashwini Ashokkumar is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at NYU. She received her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Polarization and Social Change Lab at Stanford University. Ashwini studies questions at the intersection of identity, politics, and language. Her work examines how social and political identities help or harm the realization of democratic ideals such as political deliberation and social cohesion. Ashwini is also interested in how these processes play out during times of crisis. For instance, she co-led the pandemic project which tracked socio-psychological impact of covid outbreak. Her work leverages theory-driven application of multiple methods including experiments, NLP techniques, and big data to study psychological processes in the lab and real world.
