CIRA DISM Core/ R3EDI Hub Webinar: Integrating Community Based Participatory Research Approaches with Implementation Science: Applications in HIV Prevention and Control Research

Integrating Community Based Participatory Research Approaches with Implementation Science: Applications in HIV Prevention and Control Research” Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) builds on community engaged research to also include community members with lived experience in the research team, build relationships and partnerships that learn from community perspectives and center in community priorities for research. CBPR has been shown to be effective at improving health outcomes and improving the adoption, implementation, and sustainability of interventions, which is the focus of the science of Dissemination and Implementation (D&I). Integrating CBPR into D&I presents a critical and important opportunity to advance health equity-oriented research. We will provide a theoretical and conceptual overview of integrating CBPR principles with D&I outcomes, followed by examples of such integrated projects. One example will come from an ongoing clinical trial designed to promote sustained PrEP adherence among individuals who inject drugs, and a second from a project to strengthen integration of community health workers in HIV treatment services.
