EMPH Spotlight: Mike Binney, EMPH ’25

The West Metro Fire Rescue Advanced Resource Medic in Lakewood, Colorado, is a pilot agency for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Jenna Butner uses mind-body connection to ease trauma

Dr. Jenna Butner, MD, an assistant professor adjunct of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, in the program in addiction medicine, is actively involved in an international NGO, the AZAHAR Foundation, which is committed to expanding access to the mind-body practices that promote mental and physical well-being in communities affected by genocide and transgenerational trauma. Yale Executive Bulldogs taste success at first competition

Jolene Bressi, Sham Firdausi, Ashish Sanon, and Rusty Rutherford recently took part in the 7th Annual Humana-Mays Healthcare Analytics Case Competition. The competitions showcased the students’ data analytical skills in solving real-world business problems using proprietary insurance data. Over 450 students and 150 teams from more than 100 universities participated. Teams with the top 50 scores continued to the second round; five teams made it to the third round, competing for total prize money of $100,000. The Yale team placed 31st in round one and were the only Yale team to make it into the second round. They also had the highest placement of Ivy League universities. Unfortunately, they did not make it to the final round, but the team vows to return next year!

Earl and Hampson present at APHA

Nathan Earl and Kyle Hampson presented posters at the recent APHA 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo in Atlanta. Earl’s poster was titled, “Young males impacted by commercial sexual exploitation: A scoping review of risk factors, trajectories and treatment.” Hampson’s poster was on the subject of “Ethical Considerations for the Utilization of Real World Data in Pharmacovigilance and Regulatory Activities.” Earl and Hampson’s posters were selected from many excellent submittals and was judged to be of high quality and interest.

Nathan Carroll studies ‘Swiftie Amnesia’

Nathan Carroll is the first author of a study on “Swiftie Amnesia,” the temporary memory loss some fans have experienced after attending Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour.

Carroll also recently conducted a media interview about the mental health struggles of hostages after their release from captivity.

EMPH student innovators

Three of seven student innovators highlighted in the recent Yale Public Health magazine, “Innovating for the Public Good,” were from the EMPH program: Mike Binney, Jolene Bressi, and Sham Firdausi. Read about the student innovators here.
