TITLE: “Trials, Tribulations and Successes of Using Electronic Health Record Data for Research"

ABSTRACT: Electronic health record (EHR) data contain troves of potentially useful observations collected in naturalistic healthcare settings. Unfortunately, the structures of these data are complex and always contain artifacts that may distort associations when used in observational research. There are numerous opportunities for the development of new methods to address these weaknesses. This presentation will explore examples of basic skills that are needed to begin working with electronic health record data in the context of research, some advanced methods for data cleaning, and success stories involving studies that would have been difficult to complete without EHR data.
