5th Annual Schottenfeld Lecture: Canary in the Coal Mine - A Forgotten Rural Community, a Hidden Epidemic, and a Lone Doctor Battling for the Life, Health, and Soul of the People

The Yale Program in Addiction Medicine is pleased to welcome William Cooke, MD, as speaker for September Addiction Medicine Rounds and the 5th Annual Schottenfeld Lecture

Title: "Canary in the Coal Mine: A Forgotten Rural Community, a Hidden Epidemic, and a Lone Doctor Battling for the Life, Health, and Soul of the People"

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the foundational community causes of health disparities.
  2. Consider the underlying and root causes of injection drug use and the subsequent HIV outbreak in Scott County, IN, in 2015.
  3. Describe community solutions.

In 2015, the CDC reported on a community outbreak of over 200 cases of HIV infection among people who inject drugs in Scott County, IN. Dr. William Cooke, a family physician practicing in Austin, IN, transformed his primary care practice to integrate treatment for opioid use disorder, HCV, and HIV, to serve the needs of his community. Dr. Cooke has spent 20 years working as a physician to increase access to health, hope, and opportunity to all people, regardless of their social status. He is author of Canary in the Coal Mine: A Forgotten Rural Town, a Hidden Epidemic, and a Alone Doctor Battling for the Life, Health, and Soul of the People. Dr. Cooke is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Medicine and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. His work has received national recognition including being named Physician of the Year by the American Academy of Family Physicians, joining the ranks of two US surgeons general by receiving the Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award and becoming the first physician in the nation to be awarded the Pillar of Excellence by Addiction Policy Forum.

The Schottenfeld Lecture is held each September to acknowledge the contributions of our colleague, Richard Schottenfeld, MD, to the integration of medical care and addiction treatment. Dr. Schottenfeld, an Addiction Psychiatrist and founding Director of the Yale Addiction Psychiatry Residency Training Program, is an experienced clinician, teacher and clinical researcher whose work has focused on improving the efficacy, accessibility, and availability of addiction treatment in the United States and internationally. In the 1980’s and the 1990’s, while at Yale, Richard helped pioneer primary care-based models of care for people who inject drugs. He currently serves at the Chair of Psychiatry at Howard University College of Medicine. In his role as a Professor of Psychiatry at Yale, he was instrumental in supporting and mentoring numerous clinicians and researchers locally and internationally. His work helped lay the foundation for the Yale Program in Addiction Medicine and we are delighted to honor his legacy with the annual Schottenfeld Lecture.

Addiction Medicine Rounds are CME accredited. Each session will be assigned 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.
