Code Smarter, Not Harder: Unlocking AI Assisted Coding

Coffee, Cookies, and Coding (C³) Workshop

In this workshop, we will explore the evolution of AI from Alan Turing's early work to contemporary systems. Participants will learn about different types of AI and gain a clear understanding of what AI is and is not.

The session will also cover the AI coding tool landscape. Attendees will learn best practices for creating effective prompts and verification, as well as recognizing and avoiding common pitfalls.

During the hands-on portion, attendees will process a public dataset using Yale's AI Clarity LLM and the Positron native IDE assistant. The session will involve completing a coding task through prompting, iterating, and debugging with the aid of AI tools.

Cookies and coffee will be provided.

The learning objectives for the workshop include:

  1. Foundational AI Literacy: Explain AI's evolution from Allen Turing to the modern day, distinguish between AI system types, and better articulate what AI is and isn't.
  2. Understand the AI coding tool landscape, learn best practices for prompts and verification, and identify and navigate common pitfalls.
  3. Process a public dataset using Yale's AI Clarity LLM and Positron native IDE assistant to complete a coding task through prompting, iterating, and debugging.

AI Tool Access. This workshop will include exercises using Yale’s AI Clarity LLM, which is available to Yale affiliates. Participants who have access to other large language models (LLMs) are welcome to use those instead if they prefer.

If you do not have access to an LLM, we will provide a pre-generated response that you can follow along with during the exercise. Please note that we are not able to provide participants with access to an LLM for the workshop session.
