TITLE
“Measuring Structure: Approaches and Data Insights on Structural Discrimination"
ABSTRACT
Structural racism, or a “cause of other causes”, is a key driver of health and social disparities and can occur interconnectedly or across multiple systems (e.g., economic, educational, political, social, and criminal-legal domains). Traditional measures, often reliant on self-report tools, often do not account for the multifaceted and interconnected nature of structural racism, overlooking how it operates differently across contexts, geographical locations, and intersecting identities. As such, it is critical for researchers to develop and utilize new methodology that effectively addresses such complex interplay and captures real-time, location-based information and provides insights into cumulative and contextual impacts of structural racism. Additionally, it is imperative that research identifies the ways in which structural resilience as a protective factor, might mitigate the impacts of structural racism across contexts and communities. Using examples from her work in developing novel statistical models, Dr. Cook will discuss current approaches to understanding and measuring structural racism and resilience as well as the interplay between the two.
