Poynter Fellowship Lecture

"Scholarship, Media, and the Modern Academic Career"

Join the Yale School of Public Health in hosting this Poynter Fellowship Lecture featuring Dr. Jeremy Faust, Editor-in-Chief of MedPage Today; author of the Inside Medicine newsletter; and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School. The lecture is entitled, "Scholarship, Media, and the Modern Academic Career," and will feature a brief lecture from Dr. Faust, followed by a conversation with Dean Ranney on his work in public health communications, and will end with an audience Q&A.

Jeremy Samuel Faust, MD, MS, MA is a physician, writer, and researcher. He is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, editor-in-chief of MedPage Today, and author of the Inside Medicine newsletter on Substack, which surpassed 11 million views in 2025 alone. His research and scholarship on COVID-19 outcomes, medical epidemiology, and public health policy have appeared in The Lancet, JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Network Open, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, The American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and others. A prolific essayist, he was a recipient of the 2025 Eric and Wendy Schmidt Excellence in Science Communications Award, given by the National Academies of Sciences. His writing has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Scientific American, and Slate. He has been a frequent guest on news programs, including CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNBC, FOX, PBS, BBC, and NPR, and has spoken at the Aspen Ideas Festival, the 92nd Street Y, and delivered a keynote address at the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Long Covid symposium. A dedicated classical musician, from 2010 to 2020, he served as board president and artistic advisor for Roomful of Teeth, assisting in the production of the ensemble’s GRAMMY-winning debut album featuring the Pulitzer Prize-winning recording of Caroline Shaw’s Partita for Eight Voices. He serves as conductor and artistic director of The Longwood Chorus, Boston’s 110-voice ensemble of medical and science professionals.
