Biography

Sofia Fertuzinhos, PhD, is the Research and Education Librarian for Bioinformatics at Yale’s Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library. She provides individualized bioinformatics support and consulting to basic and biomedical researchers, helping them navigate biological databases, plan sequencing projects, analyze next-generation sequencing data, and use computational tools for gene annotation, transcriptomics, pathway analysis, visualization, and reproducible research. Sofia also develops and teaches workshops on bioinformatics resources and practical data-analysis methods for the Yale research community.

Sofia earned a joint PhD in Biochemistry from Yale University and the University of Coimbra, graduating summa cum laude. Her doctoral and postdoctoral research at Yale focused on neuroscience and the development of neural cell types, integrating molecular, cellular, and systems-level approaches. Her work examined topics including cortical inhibitory-neuron development, neural-circuit maturation, transcriptomic development, and mechanisms relevant to neurological disease.

With experience in wet-lab neuroscience, RNA sequencing, mouse genetics, microscopy, molecular biology, and computational analysis, Sofia helps researchers make rigorous and effective use of Yale’s bioinformatics and research-computing resources.
