Biography

Dr. Nikolaos Thomaidis is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), a Visiting Professor at the East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai (ECUST), and the director of the “Analytical Chemistry - Quality Assurance” post-graduate program of the NKUA Department of Chemistry. His area of expertise is analytical, food and environmental chemistry, and, over the past 30 years, he has been a productive scholar with 303 publications and an h-index of 69. Dr. Thomaidis research team focuses on trace analysis and mass spectrometry (TrAMS,) with current interest being the development of cutting-edge High Resolution Mass Spectrometric (HRMS) methodologies and workflows to fully characterize the molecular “fingerprint” of environmental samples and foodstuffs. He has extensive experience in supervising and coordinating projects with Greek and European funding agencies (e.g., EC, OSPAR and HELCOM Commissions) relating to the occurrence of priority pollutants, emerging contaminants and their transformation products in the global environment. Since 2016, his TrAMS team has served as the reference laboratory for the determination of priority pollutants and emerging contaminants of the Black Sea (funded by UNDP). Dr. Thomaidis is a core member representing Greece in the Network of Reference Laboratories for the Monitoring of Emerging Pollutants (NORMAN), participating in inter-laboratory studies and European networks involved in pollution monitoring. Over the last 20 years, sewage epidemiology has become one of his research pillars. The analysis and systematic monitoring of thousands of chemicals in raw wastewater has provided valuable information about the health status and lifestyle habits of the Athenian community. Most recently, his research team has been developing multiplex PCR methods that allow reliable quantification of SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses in wastewater and the development of an early warning system for COVID-19 within the various communities in Greece.
