Adrienne Groccia interned at the Value Based Healthcare Programme of the University of Oxford last summer analyzing end-of-life care systems in both England and the United States.
She learned how end-of-life care is delivered at the national level in England and how policymakers lead national reform efforts after attending a series of national policy-making meetings. The opportunity to learn from England’s National Health System provided Adrienne with applicable insights into the power of incentive alignment for physician reimbursement, which is especially important given the shift in the US away from fee-for-service reimbursement towards value-based reimbursement models.
In addition, she participated in multidisciplinary team meetings at a local hospice where she gained an understanding of the concrete challenges that small providers face on a daily basis. At this hospice, she also observed managers and clinicians who experimented with different methods of care coordination to improve care for their patients.
