We spoke with Eugene Shapiro, MD, about his current projects and how he can advise and help junior faculty at Yale School of Medicine.

Can you tell us about your role(s) at Yale?

I am a professor of pediatrics, and of epidemiology and of investigative medicine, vice chair for research in the Department of Pediatrics, co-director of education at Yale Center for Clinical Investigation/CTSA, deputy director of the Yale PhD Program in Investigative Medicine, and the director of grant writing and evaluation at the Office for Physician Scientist and Scientist Development.

Can you share a bit about the work you're currently doing?

I teach intensive, semester-long courses in grant-writing and a course on mentoring. I run mock study sections for faculty from the entire biomedical campus who are planning to submit grants. I help direct Yale's KL-2 and TL-1 career development programs, and I help direct the PhD Program in Investigative Medicine.

What national organizations are you affiliated with or involved in?

  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society
  • Infectious Diseases Society of America
  • American Pediatric Society
  • American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Association for Clinical and Translational Science

Do you have any recent publications or op-eds?

In your role, how can you help other faculty members?

I can help direct people to folks who can be most helpful to them, and I have a lot of experience that can be useful in helping to guide faculty who have questions.

For early-career faculty considering a similar career trajectory, what key lessons or advice would you share?

Keep an open mind and take advantages of opportunities that come your way - often better to say yes than to say no.

What about Yale is most special to you, or what do you like most about working/being here?

The people are great; I especially like helping young people in their careers.
