It shouldn't be so hard to find an in-network doctor
Never has it been more important to provide patients with accurate tools to help navigate our fragmented healthcare system. At my hospital in New York City, we discharged hundreds of previously healthy COVID patients, many without regular doctors, now in need of care to manage the lingering effects of their illness — shortness of breath, kidney damage, depression and anxiety, among many others. Others have had their coverage disrupted due to changes in employment and need to find new doctors.

Academic medicine leads efforts to address the opioid epidemic
Tragically, 130 people die every day in this country from an opioid overdose. About 2 million Americans were living with opioid addiction in 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Medical schools and teaching hospitals see the effects of the epidemic every day in their communities. When the mortality rate for opioid use disorder started to accelerate in 2013, concerns were raised that the problem somehow reflected a failure in medical education.

Opioid treatment with buprenorphine launches at three D.C. emergency rooms
Three D.C. hospitals have launched programs providing medication-assisted addiction treatment to recent overdose victims in emergency rooms, a key component in the District’s plan to reduce overdose deaths by half by the end of next year. Similar initiatives have been set up at hospital emergency departments across the country, based on a 2015 study at Yale New Haven Hospital that showed users who start buprenorphine during emergency-room visits often have more success in recovery.

Starting opioid addiction treatment in the ED is cost-effective, says study
The most cost-effective treatment for people with untreated opioid addiction who visit the emergency department (ED) is buprenorphine, a medication to reduce drug cravings and withdrawal, say Yale researchers. Their study found that among patients who came to the ED, the ED-initiated medication strategy was most likely to be cost-effective compared to referral alone or a brief intervention with facilitated referral, the researchers said.
