Student Spotlight: Liza Koshy, MPH ’24 (Chronic Disease Epidemiology)

July 25, 2024

What initially drew you to working at the EIP?

I wanted a part-time job while I am in school where I’m getting hands-on public health experience and applying the knowledge I gain through my program. As a Chronic Disease Epidemiology major, HPV IMPACT was a great fit for me as it catered to my interest in infections that can lead to chronic conditions over time. I was also interested in the opportunity to work under an epidemiologist to learn more about disease surveillance and how findings are used to inform public health decision-making.

What has been your favorite part about working at the EIP?

My favorite part about working at the EIP is the opportunity to be involved in a variety of meaningful public health projects while I’m still in school. I had the chance to conduct a study on gauging provider practices when it comes to administering the HPV vaccine in the 27-45 age group in Connecticut. I received the opportunity to design the survey, collect data, conduct analysis, and present my research to other public health practitioners at the Northeast Epidemiology Conference. It was an incredible opportunity to be involved in such a meaningful project at the same time as I’m learning about conducting studies and data analysis in my epidemiology courses at YSPH.

How do you feel the EIP has prepared you to enter the public health workforce?

The EIP provided numerous opportunities for me to gain hands-on experience in conducting public health surveillance over the past year that I have worked with the HPV IMPACT Team. I learned so much about conducting public health research, the nuances tied to data analysis and how to effectively communicate finding to stakeholders.

What are your professional plans after graduation?

I became interested in health strategy work after interning as a consultant last summer. I am looking to pursue public health consulting work after graduating in a few weeks.
