Dr. Peter Hotez to be honored with prestigious Winslow Medal

Yale School of Public Health Dean Megan L. Ranney, MD, MPH, announced today that Dr. Peter Hotez, BA '80, MD, PhD, has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the prestigious C.-E. A. Winslow Medal. This award honors individuals whose work embodies the ideals of C.-E. A. Winslow, the founder of our school and a pioneer of modern public health.

Dr. Hotez is a distinguished pediatrician-scientist, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, and serves as professor and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He is renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to vaccine development and his unwavering commitment to addressing neglected tropical diseases and public health disparities.

Dr. Hotez is a graduate of Yale College and previously spent a decade as a postdoctoral fellow and on our faculty during the 1990s.

As a key figure in advancing global health initiatives, Dr. Hotez has, over a career spanning decades, led efforts to develop vaccines for diseases affecting impoverished populations. An estimated 100 million doses of these vaccines have reached populations in low- and middle-income countries. His dedication to addressing social determinants of health aligns closely with the values of our institution and the legacy of C.-E. A. Winslow.

Beyond his research and leadership roles, Dr. Hotez has emerged as a strong advocate for science and public health, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has played a vital role in promoting vaccine education and combating misinformation, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and trust in health interventions.

The Winslow Medal serves as a tribute to exceptional achievements in public health leadership and scholarship." Dr. Hotez's innovative work and steadfast commitment to improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations make him a truly deserving recipient of this honor," Ranney said.

Dr. Hotez will formally receive the Winslow Medal at an awards ceremony on April 24 at the Yale School of Public Health. The event is open to active Yale community members for in-person attendance. The general public is welcome and encouraged to participate via Zoom.
