Kaveh Khoshnood, PhD, MPH

Kaveh Khoshnood is an infectious disease epidemiologist whose research spans humanitarian health and crisis epidemiology, research ethics, HIV/AIDS and substance use, and the health consequences of armed conflict and displacement. His work examines how conflict, forced migration, political violence, environmental threats, and disruptions to health systems affect population health, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Through the PEACE Lab — Public Health, Evidence, Action, Crisis Epidemiology, and Environment — Dr. Khoshnood works with interdisciplinary and international partners to develop and apply epidemiologic approaches to humanitarian crises. His current research includes population health, displacement, public health surveillance, and health-system disruption in conflict-affected settings, particularly in Sudan and the Middle East and North Africa region. He also works to strengthen public health education, research capacity, and academic partnerships in Bhutan and other international settings.

Dr. Khoshnood has more than three decades of experience in the epidemiology and prevention of HIV/AIDS and substance use, particularly among people who use drugs and other marginalized populations. He also studies ethical challenges in research involving vulnerable and crisis-affected populations. Across these areas, his work emphasizes equitable international partnerships, local research capacity strengthening, mentorship, and the use of public health evidence to inform responses to humanitarian crises.
