EMD Seminar Series: Doug Brackney - "Navigating the Vector Landscape: From Infection to Transmission"

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector for numerous human pathogens, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever virus. These arthropod-borne (arbo)viruses present a continued threat to human health worldwide with therapeutics and vaccines remaining limited. Mosquitoes become infected with these viruses through the acquisition of an infectious blood meal. Once ingested, viruses must initiate infection of the mosquito midgut before spreading to secondary tissues such as salivary glands which facilitate transmission. The mechanisms mediating infection, dissemination and transmission remain poorly understood. Our laboratory has been working to address these unknown processes in hopes of identifying host factors that could be exploited for the development of the next generation of vector control strategies.
