Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Update (February 2025)

February 11, 2025

Outreach and Recruitment

We look forward to the Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) and Yale School of Medicine (YSM) "Diversifying the Healthcare Workforce Dinner" at the Omni Hotel on February 20. We expect over 100 students to join about 80 faculty and residents. As mentioned in my update last month, attendance will not affect how our programs rank students, as programs will have submitted their final rank lists before the dinner event. Leaders of YSM, YNHH, and the Yale Alumni Association will give welcome remarks.

The Minority Housestaff Organization held two virtual hour events in January for students interviewed by our programs. Over 120 students interacted with over 30 residents.

YSM and YNHH will send a 15-person delegation of faculty and residents to the Howard University College of Medicine career fair next month. Preparations are being finalized.

Plans for our March recruitment and outreach event in Puerto Rico are in full swing. This collaboration is with YSM’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Deputy Dean Darin Latimore, MD; Associate Dean Marietta Vazquez, MD, FAAP; and the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, Community Engagement, and Equity. We expect to send a 24-person delegation to showcase our supportive, inclusive culture and learning climate and the outstanding training opportunities and resources at YSM and YNHH.

Retention

Last month, Aba Black, MD, MHS, led a retreat for the Section of General Medicine titled “Revitalize and Retain: Building a Culture of Commitment & Growth.” The retreat was very engaging and well-attended. Topics discussed included mentorship and strategies to promote retention. Attendees used case scenarios to guide the discussion.

Dr. Black and I will deliver Grand Rounds for the Department of Medicine of Tufts University School of Medicine this month. We will discuss faculty inclusion efforts and the academic appointments and promotion process in academic medicine. The focus will be on how to integrate and reward such efforts.

Upcoming Talks

Given the Presidents' Day long weekend, our Equity Begins with Everyone (EBE) gathering on Monday, February 17, will not be held. I look forward to seeing everyone at our March 17 EBE gathering.

Below are some of the secular and religious events during February:

I am committed to supporting and expanding our efforts within the Department of Internal Medicine; please join me. Equity begins with everyone. Together, we strive. Together, we rise.

Respectfully Yours,

Benjamin
