The Department of Surgery announces that Alan Dardik, MD, PhD, Chief of Surgery at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System and Professor of Surgery and Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), will be stepping down from his Yale positions to pursue an exciting new leadership opportunity. Effective March 2025, Dr. Dardik will join the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Surgery and Co-Director of the Jacobson Aortic Center. His award-winning research lab will transition to Mount Sinai in the summer of 2025.
Dr. Dardik has been an integral member of the Department of Surgery faculty for nearly 25 years, since 2001. During his tenure, he served as Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs from 2015 to 2024 and as Interim Division Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery from 2018 to 2019.
An internationally recognized leader in vascular research with over 400 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Dardik’s NIH-funded laboratory has made groundbreaking contributions to understanding the healing and function of blood vessels, fistulae, and vascular patches used in surgery and have led to new advances for patients requiring arteriovenous fistulae that are currently in clinical trials.
In addition to his research, Dr. Dardik has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to mentorship and education. Over the years, he has guided over 25 predoctoral students pursuing MD, PhD, MD/PhD, and master’s degrees, as well as more than 50 postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have gone on to successful academic careers. His excellence in teaching has been recognized with the prestigious C. Elton Cahow Award for Outstanding Faculty Teaching and the Faculty Teaching Award from St. Mary’s Hospital. Dr. Dardik also created the faculty mentorship program for Yale Surgery in his capacity as Vice Chair.
Dr. Dardik’s impact extends beyond Yale. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of JVS-Vascular Science and has held leadership roles as President of the New England Society for Vascular Surgery, the Association of VA Surgeons, and the International Society for Vascular Surgery. He has given over 300 invited lectures worldwide.
