Step 1: Scoring the benchmarks
Each of the 54 BBF benchmarks are scored as follows: 0 (not progress) 1 (minimal progress) 2 (partial progress) or 3 (major progress). Each benchmark has specific criteria used to score. Refer to the specific gear to find a description of each benchmark, where to find the relevant data and how to assign a score to each benchmark. The country BBF committee must reach consensus on each score before it is recorded.

Benchmark AG1: There have been major events that have drawn media attention to breastfeeding issues.
To determine the score for this benchmark, examine the available data that has been collected by the BBF committee and support staff. Then determine which criteria have been met:
- A score of 0 (no progress): There have not been any major events that have drawn media attention to breastfeeding issues.
- A score of 1 (minimal progress): Limited media attention towards breastfeeding issues has been generated by major events and reached only the local level.
- A score of 2 (partial progress): Some media attention towards breastfeeding issues has been generated by major events and has reached the subnational level.
- A score of 3 (major progress): Substantial media attention towards breastfeeding issues has been generated by major events, reaching the national level.
The BBF Calculator is available to help countries calculate the gear scores and total BBF scores.
