Strengthening Health Systems

Within the Strengthening Health Systems portfolio, we work directly with Ministries of Health to support their visions for health systems strengthening. We build systems and tools for performance management and accountability, catalyze intersectoral leadership teams, and evaluate complex interventions to improve health systems performance. For example:

Public health researchers are responsible for generating actionable research and educating the next generation of public health professionals. Our Research Leadership Program is a 12-week, certificate-level program designed to increase leadership and mentorship capacity among junior and mid-level researchers from leading public health institutions. The program aims to prepare participants to mentor trainees and junior faculty, assume leadership roles within their research organizations, and develop stronger professional and research collaborations within and between institutions. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, the US Embassy, and USAID, we have delivered this program in South Africa, Sudan, Chad, and India, and for the global network of fellows in the NIH-funded Global Health Emerging Scholars program.

The Expanded Program on Immunization Leadership and Management Program (EPI LAMP) was a 9-month executive-style certificate program that prepared national EPI teams to manage an increasingly complex EPI program, with attention to efficient operations, robust performance management and improvement, and effective political engagement and advocacy. The program was supported by Gavi and delivered in partnership with University of Yaoundé in Cameroon, University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda, and PATH. The program, delivered in both English and French, reached five cohorts, 27 countries, and 100 alumni for improved national immunization performance. Building on the EPI LAMP program, we continue to enjoy strong collaborations with University of Yaoundé in the delivery of leadership programming for health leaders from across the region.
