EMD Seminar Series: "Emergent Risk: What the Story of USAID’s PREDICT Tells Us About Global Health Security, Pandemics, and Ecological Crisis"

From 2009–2020, USAID operated a program called PREDICT that aimed to identify where animal viruses were most likely to spill over and infect people. PREDICT developed scientific and state capacities to assess risks associated with human-wildlife contact across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. While the program introduced new approaches to understanding pandemic spillover, its work also revealed challenges related to global health security, health equity, and the structural drivers of pandemic risk. In this talk, Dr. Holmberg will be discussing PREDICT’s approach to pandemic prevention, its limitations, and what its story can tell us about building more equitable and effective global health security systems.
