Presence of rare eastern equine encephalitis virus has Northeast towns on high alert
Officials in Massachusetts and surrounding states are on high alert after recent tests detected a reemergence of the rare but deadly eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus in the region. Yale School of Public Health Associate Professor Nathan Grubaugh, an infectious disease epidemiologist, said there were early signs that 2024 could potentially be a bad year for EEE.

Fauci illness highlights threat of West Nile Virus
Dr. Anthony Fauci’s recent diagnosis with a case of West Nile virus has brought renewed attention to the little-known illness that is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States. Yale School of Public Health Associate Professor Nathan Grubaugh, an infectious disease epidemiologist, said the number of cases of West Nile virus nationally has stayed relatively stable over the past decade with about 1,000 to 3,000 cases per year.

With $25 million in funding over five years, the center’s goal will be to improve technologies and coordinated processes for systematically monitoring infectious diseases and emerging variants, enabling the U.S. to better prevent and respond to outbreaks.
