CMIPS/ISC Seminar: Brian Mittman "Strengthening Implementation Science to Enhance and Accelerate Its Contributions to Improved Health"

A growing collection of published articles have noted the significant progress and contributions achieved by the field of implementation science in health during the past 4 decades while also highlighting – and presenting specific recommendations to address -- the remaining challenges we face in fully achieving our mission to produce impact, i.e., to facilitate more rapid, significant improvement in implementation outcomes and patient and population health. This seminar opens with a brief summary of our field’s rich contributions to key societal outcomes (part 1), followed by a discussion (part 2) of remaining challenges and needed activities to address them. Part 2 includes (a) presentation of a synthesis and expansion of the recommendations to strengthen implementation science presented in recent publications, (b) a summary of key barriers to their adoption, and (c) an overview of the design and early accomplishments of a multisector, multicomponent, international initiative to redirect and revitalize implementation science. This initiative aims to enhance the value and use of implementation science, thereby strengthening its contributions to improvements in healthcare and public health practice and hence in population health and related societal outcomes.
