YSPH Climate Change and Health Special Seminar: “The Changing Landscape of Scholarly Publishing: The View from an Editor’s Desk” with Dr. Joel D. Kaufman

Abstract: The nature of publishing scholarly work is changing rapidly. There are many factors challenging authors and editors, including the growth of predatory journal practices, fast-moving advances in artificial intelligence, increasing rate of paper retractions, evolving open access requirements and processes, and the growth of paper mills. After a quick tour of the issues, we’ll have an open discussion of best practices in authorship and peer reviewer.

Bio: Dr. Kaufman is a physician-epidemiologist, board-certified in internal medicine and occupational medicine. He has been a full-time faculty member at the University of Washington since 1997, where he is Professor of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, Medicine (General Internal Medicine), and Epidemiology. He has maintained a research portfolio that includes both epidemiological and experimental research funded primarily by NIH and the USEPA. He directs the University of Washington’s Interdisciplinary Center for Exposures, Diseases, Genomics and Environment (EDGE Center). He maintains a primary care internal medicine practice and is an elected member of the US National Academy of Medicine. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Health Perspectives since 2020. Dr. Kaufman’s work integrates epidemiology, exposure sciences, toxicology and clinical medicine. His current research activities are primarily focused on environmental factors in chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, metabolic disorders, and neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Kaufman received his MD from the University of Michigan and his MPH from the University of Washington.
