Yale Department of Surgery Announces New Education Leadership Appointments

February 07, 2025

The Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery is pleased to announce key leadership appointments within its residency training programs. Andrew Dhanasopon, MD, has been named Associate Program Director (APD) for the General Surgery Residency, effective Feb. 10. He will continue to support the Integrated Six-Year (I-6) Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency until March 1, when Madonna Lee, MD, officially begins her new role as APD for the I-6 program.

“These residency programs have undergone significant transitions in recent years, and our trainees deserve strong, steady leadership,” said Vice Chair of Education and Inclusive Excellence, Paris Butler, MD, MPH. “Drs. Dhanasopon and Lee are outstanding educators and mentors whose appointments will provide the stability and vision needed to support our residents and ensure the continued excellence of our training programs.”

Dr. Dhanasopon, an Associate Professor of Thoracic Surgery, brings extensive expertise in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, hiatal hernias, mediastinal and chest wall tumors, as well as acquired and congenital chest wall deformities. Practicing at both the New Haven campus and the VA hospital in West Haven, where he serves as Site Director of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Dhanasopon is dedicated to advancing cancer care through quality improvement research in thoracic surgery. His leadership appointment reflects the department’s commitment to multidisciplinary education and its vision for an integrated training mission.

Dr. Lee, an Assistant Professor at Yale and a pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgeon, completed her congenital cardiac surgery fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Her expertise in congenital heart surgery will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons.

As APDs, Drs. Dhanasopon and Lee will collaborate closely with residency program leaders, as well as with Dr. Mehra Golshan, Director of Education, and Dr. Butler. Their leadership will provide much-needed stability to these programs, ensuring residents have the mentorship and support they need to thrive in an evolving surgical landscape.
