Shelli Farhadian Appointed Physician Scientist Training Program Director

Shelli Farhadian, MD, PhD, has been appointed director of the Yale Department of Internal Medicine Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP), effective October 1, 2026.

In her new role, Dr. Farhadian will lead and grow the American Board of Internal Medicine Research Pathway within the Traditional Internal Medicine Residency Program, designed for residents who are pursuing academic medicine careers in basic or clinical research. The PSTP program provides dedicated mentor support to trainees on the path to careers as physician-scientists.

Dr. Farhadian is an infectious diseases specialist who focuses on the neurological complications of infections, including HIV. In her clinical role, she cares for adults with HIV and with neurological complications of Lyme, syphilis, and other infectious diseases.

An associate professor of medicine (infectious diseases) and neurology at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), and an associate professor of epidemiology of microbial diseases at Yale School of Public Health, Dr. Farhadian leads an NIH-funded translational research laboratory that studies how infections like HIV and COVID-19 affect the central nervous system. She collaborates with colleagues in neurology, geriatrics, and public health to bring a cross-disciplinary approach to her work. She is the recipient of the John N. Forrest, Jr. MD Prize for Mentorship in Student Research at YSM and the Iva Dostanic, MD, PhD, Physician-Scientist Trainee Award.

Dr. Farhadian completed her MD-PhD training at the Tri-Institutional program at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Rockefeller University, in New York City. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital, followed by a fellowship in infectious diseases in our department.
