Eyiyemisi Damisah, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery and of neuroscience, is receiving a Hypothesis Fund seed grant for her project, Neuronal mechanisms of statistical learning in humans, which asks, "What can single neurons teach us about how the human brain recognizes patterns in repeating external stimuli (e.g. words and structure of language)?" The fund supports research projects at their earliest stages, typically before there are any preliminary data, and the process delights Damisah: "I think the beauty of this is – you cannot apply for the funding. They ask world-class scientists to scout out junior faculty they think [are] doing something cool and then they pick you."
