BIDS has welcomed the following new faculty, fellows, and staff since October 2024:
New Faculty
Dr. Andrew Loza is a physician-scientist whose research focuses on predictive analytics and population health. He received his PhD from Washington University in St. Louis in biophysics studying mechanisms of collective cell migration using time lapse microscopy coupled with computer vision methods and simulation. He completed his MD degree at the Yale University School of Medicine and residency in Internal Medicine – Pediatrics also at Yale. During this time he contributed to development of a COVID-19 census prediction model and conducted research on the effect of COVID-19 on routine pediatric outpatient care. Learn more.
New Postdoctoral Associates
Dr. Zhenyue Qin is a Postdoctoral Associate working on AI for healthcare with Prof Qingyu Chen. Previously, he was a Senior Researcher at Tencent XR Vision Labs, where he was fortunate to work with Prof Hongdong Li. He completed both his PhD and undergraduate (1st Honors) studies at the Australian National University. He has published papers on various prestiguous conferences and journals like CVPR, AAAI, EMNLP, and TNNLS. His research interests encompass AI for healthcare, large vision-language models, and 3D computer vision.
Dr. Yang Ren is a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale's Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science.
Dr. Linhui Xie is a postdoctoral associate in Yale's Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 2024, where his research advanced Alzheimer’s disease understanding through interpretable deep learning and multi-omic integration methods.
At Yale, Dr. Xie works with Dr. María Rodríguez Martínez, focusing on computational modeling, bioinformatics, systems biology, and interpretable AI. His research integrates multi-omic data, neuroimaging, and pathway modeling to study neurodegeneration, brain connectomes, T cell receptor binding, B cell development, and autoimmune disease mechanisms. Dr. Chia-Hsuan Chang is a postdoctoral associate in the Clinical NLP lab, led by Dr. Hua Xu, at the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Yale School of Medicine. His research focuses on natural language processing, data science, and large language models, particularly their applications in enhancing healthcare. He obtained a Ph.D. in information management from National Sun Yat-sen University, under the advice of Dr. San-Yih Hwang. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the College of Computing & Informatics at Drexel University, mentored by Dr. Christopher Yang.
Dr. Zhen Chen is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Yale University, working with Prof. Qingyu Chen and Prof. Hua Xu. Prior to that, he worked as an Assistant Professor in Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2022 to 2024. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, City University of Hong Kong in 2022 and worked as Postdoctoral Fellow, advised by Prof. Yixuan Yuan. Learn more.
Dr. Fan Ma is a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale's Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science.
Dr. Kriti Bhattarai is a postdoctoral associate in the Clinical NLP lab, led by Dr. Hua Xu, at the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Yale School of Medicine. Her research centers on natural language processing with a focus on its applications in healthcare, including the use of large language models for biomedical research. Kriti graduated with a doctoral degree in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis in 2024, where she was advised by Dr. Albert M. Lai. Learn more.
Dr. Hyunjae Kim is currently a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science at Yale University School of Medicine. Prior to this, he earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Korea University in 2023, where he also served as a Postdoctoral Researcher from 2023 to 2024.
Dr. Kim specializes in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Biomedical NLP, and the application of AI in healthcare and scientific discovery. His current research focuses on developing multimodal large language models for biomedical data analysis and reliable healthcare solutions. Learn more.
New Staff Members
Lana Kareem is a Software Engineer at Yale’s Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering with a concentration in Bioinformatics from the University of Connecticut and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science with a specialization in Interactive Intelligence at the Georgia Institute of Technology. At Yale BIDS, Lana contributes to innovative projects such as developing secure voting portals for data mapping, designing user-friendly web applications using React.js and Python, and integrating blockchain technology into clinical data management systems to ensure transparency and immutability.
