Biography

Rex Wong is the director of Hospital Strengthening Initiative at the Yale School of Medicine. He has over 28 years of hospital and health care work experience. He has worked and lived in Liberia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Africa, Egypt, Australia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, India, Hong Kong, United States, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and Tanzania on various hospital management, national health system and senior leadership programs.

Dr. Wong is currently the directing the health management and leadership component of the Liberia Health Workforce program; implemented hospital management and quality improvement projects in various hospitals in Liberia and well as setting up the Health Management certificate program for the University of Liberia; responsible for developing the curriculum, building local faculty capacity, providing senior leadership training, developing course materials, and mentoring students. He previously also conducted similar hospital management programs while serving as Country Director in Rwanda and in Egypt and Regional Director in Ethiopia. He was one of the co-authors of the Blueprints for Hospital Management in Ethiopia, Ethiopia Hospital Management Initiative (2007) which later was developed into Ethiopian Hospital Reform Implementation Guidelines (2010); serves as the standard for all public hospitals in Ethiopia. He also set up the national key performance indicator (KPI) reporting database for Ethiopia.

His other previous work experience included served as CEO and COO of a private hospital in Panama, participated in 2 start-up hospitals in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, set up the first amputee rehabilitation program in Middle East, and evaluated the Tanzania Coca Cola supply chain program.

Dr. Wong was invited as presenter in many internationals conferences, guest speaker in different universities, and has been instructing in many senior leadership training programs in many countries. He has published over 40 articles.

He is also a faculty at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda, a higher education academic institute founded by Partners In Health, and directs three modules in the Master in Global Health Delivery program.

    From 2009 to 2011, GHLI and the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) partnered to establish the Hospital Strengthening Initiative to improve hospital care for patients with cardiovascular disease.
