Why did you choose the Yale School of Public Health?
I chose the Yale School of Public Health because of its commitment to global health. Having lived in multiple countries and seen how health application varies across borders made me want to study at a place with a dedication to the health of the world’s citizens. Regardless of what I planned on concentrating in while doing my MPH here, I knew that I would have access to global thinkers and international opportunities. Additionally, there is a one-year program for advanced professionals that allows me to pursue my MPH in a time frame in line with my career path.
What were you doing before enrolling at YSPH?
I was a medical student at SUNY Downstate who had already started his fourth year. I had just begun my advanced clinical year rotations when I decided to pause that path in order to formalize my interest in public health with an MPH from Yale.
What are your favorite aspects of the YSPH academic program?
I appreciate how available faculty are. I have had the opportunity to passionately discuss public health topics and the changes I would like to see in the world, as well as just random musings on life, with faculty after class, after lectures or when I randomly bump into them on the street. The warmth that seems to be present in almost everyone here, fosters a special learning environment where conversation and thought are both free flowing.
What was your most impactful experience outside of class?
I was chatting with a professor about how excited I was about living in the famous “New England” and that in addition to my in-classroom experiences, I was looking forward to exploring the Northeast with my friend. Every time we have bumped into one another after that, I have shared with him where I have visited, and he has added more sites to my “To Do” list! I am pleasantly surprised to see that not only our academic wellbeing, but also our personal wellbeing, is of interest and importance to our professors!
Do you have a favorite Yale place or New Haven food?
New Haven food places touch me in many special ways. Lalibela was the first place I visited when I came to New Haven after getting accepted, so it has a special place in my heart. Also, after living in India and Mexico, Tandoor and Taqueria Tlaxcala are convenient ways to kill cravings while the world slowly opens up again.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
After graduation, I will return to Brooklyn to finish my last year of medical school before residency. After completing my training, I hope to weave public health, medicine and my past international experiences into a career that focuses on global health disparities.
