May 19, 2014

Ron Adelman, M.D., MPH, MBA, professor of ophthalmology and visual science, and director of the Yale Retina Service, will lead the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, pending a search for a permanent chair.

Dr. Adelman will serve as interim chair of the department following the appointment of James Tsai, M.D., MBA, as president of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and chair of ophthalmology for the Mount Sinai Health System, effective September 1.

Dr. Adelman’s formal education includes a master of public health degree from the University of California at Berkeley, residency training at Harvard and Stanford, and a two-year retina fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School. During his years at Harvard, he received many awards, including the Club Vit Fellow Research Award, the Ron G. Michels Fellowship Award, and Fellow of the Year 2000. He received his MBA from Yale School of Management in 2011.

“On behalf of the school, I extend sincere thanks to Jim Tsai, who became chair of the department in October 2006,” wrote Dean Robert J. Alpern, M.D. in an announcement. “Dr. Tsai continued the department’s tradition as an internationally recognized leader in patient care, vision research, and medical education. In addition, he served as chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Board of Governors of Yale Medical Group.”
