Melinda Irwin, associate dean of research and Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology (chronic diseases) at the Yale School of Public Health, has been appointed deputy director for the Yale Cancer Center beginning in January.

Irwin’s current role in the Yale Cancer Center is associate director (population sciences). “I hope to continue to bring attention to population sciences research and resources needed to do impactful cancer research that leads to scientific breakthroughs, healthier communities, and informs policy and practice,” Irwin said.

Also named deputy directors in the cancer center are Roy Herbst, Ensign Professor of Medicine (medical oncology) and professor of pharmacology; and Daniel DiMaio, Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Genetics, and professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry, and of therapeutic radiology.

“I am convinced that Dr. Herbst’s clinical and translational expertise, Dr. DiMaio’s laboratory science experience, and Dr. Irwin’s success in population science research will provide us with the strongest possible program,” said Eric Winer, director of the Yale Cancer Center.
