Dr. Michael Cappello to serve as interim director of YIGH

Michael Cappello, MD, chair of the Department of Epidemiology (Microbial Diseases) and professor of epidemiology (microbial diseases) at the Yale School of Public Health, will serve as the interim director of the Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH) while a search takes place for a permanent director, Interim YSPH Dean Melinda Pettigrew recently announced.

Cappello is filling a vacancy left by the departure of Saad Omer, the institute’s former director who recently announced he was leaving to become the inaugural dean of the new Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, effective June 1, 2023. At Yale, Omer served as the director of YIGH, as well as associate dean (global health research) at the Yale School of Medicine, Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases), professor of epidemiology (microbial diseases) at Yale School of Public Health, and adjunct professor at Yale School of Nursing.

In addition to his other duties, Cappello is a professor of pediatrics (infectious diseases) and of microbial pathogenesis; associate director of the MD-PhD program, and an affiliated faculty member at YSPH.
