DESCRIPTION:NOTE: All are invited to attend in person but may also attend
via Zoom SPEAKER: Tamar Ginossar\, PhD\, Professor of Communication and J
ournalism\, University of New Mexico TITLE: "Engaging in Communities in E
nvironmental Health Research" Abstract. Engaging communities in environme
ntal health research is essential for producing actionable\, culturally a
ppropriate and sustainable solutions\, especially in regions facing compl
ex environmental challenges. Drawing on lessons from New Mexico communiti
 es\, including wildfire-affected areas\, rural water systems\, and mining
communities\, this presentation will highlight effective strategies for
building long-term partnerships by supporting community research prioriti
es. Key insights include the importance of trust building\, applying evid
ence-based clear communication (Plain Language) principles\, shared decis
ion-making\, and honoring local cultures and knowledge. Case examples fro
m collaborations with rural\, mining\, Native American\, and Urban commun
ities illustrate how co-designed research can improve environmental monit
oring\, environmental health communication\, and diversify academic resea
rch portfolios. These lessons offer a framework for strengthening environ
mental health community engagement in different communities. YSPH values
inclusion & access for all participants. If you have questions about acce
ssibility or would like to request an accommodation\, please contact Lore
