DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jayajit Chakraborty is a Professor and Mellichamp Endowed 
 Chair in Racial Environmental Justice at the Bren School of Environmental
  Science & Management at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. He
  has a Ph.D. in Geography and M.S. in Urban & Regional Planning\, both fr
 om the University of Iowa. Dr. Chakraborty’s research activities encompas
 s a wide range of concerns related to the human dimensions of climate and
  environmental change\, with an emphasis on environmental justice and com
 munity vulnerability to hazards\, risks\, and disasters. His research uti
 lizes a variety of methodologies\, including applications of GIScience an
 d spatial statistical techniques\, as well as social surveys and mixed me
 thods approaches. He recently served as a member of the U.S. Environmenta
 l Protection Agency (EPA) Science Advisory Board and the inaugural EPA En
 vironmental Justice Science Committee\, and a National Academies of Scien
 ces Committee that provided recommendations regarding data and tools for
