EMD Seminar Series: Swati Gupta - "Vaccine Development for Emerging Infectious Diseases: Critical Partnerships Enabling Clinical Trials in Outbreak Settings in Africa"

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) pose an ongoing threat to global health security, requiring innovative approaches to vaccine development and equitable access. This talk will explore a novel vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)-based platform designed to deliver thermostable vaccines for EIDs such as Marburg, Sudan virus, and Lassa fever. The platform enables interchangeable production and rapid scale-up in low-cost facilities, supporting outbreak preparedness and response. The presentation will highlight strategies for end-to-end vaccine development, including partnerships that strengthen regional capacity, advance regulatory pathways, and enable local manufacturing and stockpiling in Africa and other low- and middle-income countries. Through global collaborations with funders, manufacturers, and research partners, this approach aims to accelerate licensure and ensure timely availability of vaccines where they are most needed. In addition, the session will include a discussion on career pathways in public health and opportunities to contribute to global health innovation.
