CIRA Talk: "Integrating Hypertension Screening and Treatment into HIV Care in Uganda"

OVERVIEW

The burden of hypertension among persons living with HIV (PLHIV) is increasing in Uganda with the aging of the population of PLHIV and changes in diet, lifestyle, and work patterns. Our research focuses on integrating hypertension and HIV care by characterizing current care delivery patterns and gaps in implementing best practices in diagnosing and treating hypertension among PLHIV. We also use quantitative methods to describe these practices in the form of quality of care cascades, and qualitative methods to understand barriers and facilitators of high quality management of hypertension as part of HIV care. Recently, we used implementation science methods to adapt the WHO HEARTS protocol to integrate screening and treatment of hypertension into HIV care at a large HIV clinic in Uganda. We will present our data on the effectiveness of this protocol in achieving hypertension control, as well as data on the implementation outcomes of the adapted WHO HEARTS implementation strategy among hypertensive PLHIV. These results guided the Uganda Ministry of Health to revise national guidelines for integrated management of HIV and non-communicable diseases. Additionally, we will present our next steps to use implementation science methods to integrate the management of hypertensio
