Global Health Studies Speaker Series: "Heidi Cerneka: Asylum and Deportation Defense for Detained Migrants in 2020”

The Global Health Studies Program will present the second talk in its Fall 2020 Global Health Speaker Series. The series—organized by Professor Catherine Panter-Brick and Jackson lecturer Cara Fallon—examines transformative relationships between health and a range of fields including public policy, law, technology, international relations, scientific research, economy, journalism, and more.

Heidi Cerneka, Attorney at Law with the Las Americas detained team, will present “Asylum and Deportation Defense for Detained Migrants in 2020.” She will address how the process of seeking asylum works in this country and the health risks of immigration detention.

Cerneka has spent over 20 years working in deportation defense and as an advocate for incarcerated women in Latin America. She has also worked with the Jesuit Refugee Services in Kenya training incarcerated Kenyan women to be paralegals.

The Zoom webinar will include introductory remarks by Professor Panter-Brick, a brief lecture by Cernecka, and audience Q&A.
