Yearly tuition is billed by academic term — half in the fall and half in the spring. All admitted students are holistically reviewed for merit scholarship eligibility based on the comprehensive information provided in the admissions application and notified of any eligibility within 10 days of admission.

Joint Degree MPH Programs

  • Eligible joint degree programs allow students who will obtain multiple degrees the option to pursue those degrees concurrently rather than doing the programs in succession. Because you reduce each degree (typically by one academic term), you graduate sooner and pay less in tuition and living expenses than you would by pursuing the degrees in succession. As a result in most cases you would only be billed three terms of YSPH tuition, and eligible for three terms of scholarship (if you are awarded a scholarship from YSPH).
  • Students must apply separately to admissions and financial aid for each school. Financial aid processes, awards and policies are school specific. Once admitted, all charges are run through a centralized Yale billing System called YalePay.

BA-BS/MPH

BA/BS- in this five year joint degree program students combine their final Yale College year with their first year at YSPH. During that combined year, students will be eligible for financial aid through Yale College, with no additional tuition or fees assessed by YSPH. In their final year, students will be billed YSPH tuition and fees, and all financial aid will occur through YSPH. The School cannot guarantee that the financial aid award in the fifth year will be equivalent to previous awards.

Accelerated MPH/MBA

The tuition for the Accelerated MPH/MBA program is based on the SOM rate (rather than the YSPH rate) due to the abbreviated nature of the program. All payments are made through the centralized Yale billing system while in both schools, but financial aid is separate by school.

MS Program

Students in the MS program file their applications and financial aid materials through the Graduate School. More information about costs and financial aid for the MS program can be found on the GSAS website.

MS students are allowed to serve as Teaching Fellows or Research Assistants. Teaching Fellowships are generally available to MS students in the 2-year program in Public Health during their second year after they have taken classes and become familiar with the Public Health coursework. However, it is also possible to obtain a Teaching Fellowship in a department outside of Public Health. Many first year MS students have found Teaching Fellowships in within Yale College in languages, math, statistics or science departments.

Research Assistant positions are also available on a part time basis. Faculty in Public Health are generally familiar with various research projects that are in need of a research assistant. We suggest you begin your search for a research assistant position by asking your faculty advisor for suggestions. There are also many positions posted on the Student Employment website.

PhD Program

All PhD students are guaranteed five years of 12-month stipend and tuition support in the form of YSPH fellowships, teaching fellowships, traineeships and research assistantships. In addition to support for tuition and living costs, students receive a health award to covers the full cost of single-student Yale Health Plan Hospitalization/Specialty Coverage.

Faculty Advisors

PhD applicants are not required to secure a faculty mentor prior to applying to the program.

We expect applicants to provide information in their personal statement about the research they hope to conduct if admitted and to state the faculty in our department whose research aligns with their interests.

Diversity Research Awards

The PhD program in Public Health enhances commitment its PhD students who identify as underrepresented minority students, first-generation college graduates and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by offering research awards to the top candidates admitted to the program. Each year a minimum of two PhD admitted students will be offered $2,000 each for research funds in addition to their financial aid package. Recipients have up to 2 years to spend these funds, which can be used for books, computers, software, conference travel, research travel or research supplies.

This funding is offered upon acceptance into the program. The criteria for the award is:

  • Previous involvement in diversity-related initiatives in their community and/or volunteer activities helping underserved populations.
  • Research interest in serving an underserved population

External Fellowships

Current or incoming PhD students should consider applying for external fellowships to help fund their PhD. This page will provide you with valuable resources.

Term fee payment and Yale Payment Plan

Term Fees

Fall term fees and financial aid are posted to student accounts July 1 and are due for payment July 31. Spring term fees and financial aid are posted to student accounts November 1 and are due for payment on November 30. Account activity is available on a real time basis through YalePay. Most students make online payments using a U.S. checking account.

Yale Payment Plan

If a portion of your term's tuition and fees will be paid out of pocket (rather than covered with financial aid such as scholarships or loans), then you may divide term fees into 5 monthly payments through the Yale Payment Plan.

If a family member will be making payments on your behalf, you can grant them Proxy Access to your YalePay account where they can register for a Yale Payment Plan as necessary. Student employment typically offsets living expenses rather than tuition and fees, so full-time students typically don't enroll in Yale Payment Plan. However Executive Students, who are likely to be employed full-time while enrolled at YSPH part-time, may find the Payment Plan to be particularly useful.
